No. 11 Eagles Upset No. 7 Berry 5-4

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- The 11th-ranked Embry-Riddle women's tennis team avenged last season's national tournament loss to Berry, toppling the seventh-ranked Vikings 5-4, Tuesday at Embry-Riddle's Crotty Tennis Complex. The loss was the second of the year for the Vikings (6-2), while the Eagles, who registered their third straight upset of a top-10 team, improved their record to 7-5.

The Eagles went up 2-1 after Hana Im and Kerinn Meisenbach edged Anja Chan and Kirstin Ruffner 9-7 and Marga Rico-Jimenez and Anna Haller defeated Rachael Fiebelman and Kristin Cobb 8-1 in doubles. The Eagles only doubles loss was at the No. 1 position as Natalie Anaya and Lindsey Kurtz fell to sixth-ranked Kristin Hunter and Patricia Llaguno 8-5.

Hunter, ranked seventh nationally, was also successful in singles, topping No. 9 Im 6-4, 6-1.

Rico-Jimenez recorded the Eagles' first singles win, topping Fiebelman 6-2, 6-3 at the No. 5 spot.

The contest at No. 3 singles was a rematch from last year's national tournament contest between Kurtz and Chan. In 2006, Kurtz was down a set, but with the team score already decided, the match was not finished. It took three sets to decide Tuesday's contest, and this time it was Kurtz who came out on top, outlasting Chan 6-1, 3-6, 6-3.

For the third match in a row Sara Abraul recorded the match-winner at the sixth position. She downed Cobb 6-2, 6-0 to help the Eagles to their fourth straight win.

The Blue and Gold will take a break from play on Thursday, but they return to action on Friday to host Benedictine.
