DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. ? The 11th-ranked Embry-Riddle women's tennis team erased a 3-0 deficit after doubles and won five of six singles matches to topple No. 10 Brenau 5-4, Saturday at the Crotty Tennis Complex.
The five-hour match was a battle from the start as each of the three doubles matches were decided by only two points. Paula Ghilardotti and Diana Cardenas held off Natalie Anaya and Lindsay Kurtz 8-6 at No. 1, and Natalia Aranguren and Lindsay Woon edged Kerinn Meisenbach and Hana Im by the same margin at the No. 2 spot. At the third position, Marcela Lasprilla and Jolene Wong bested Marga Rico Jimenez and Anna Haller 9-7 to give the Tigers a 3-0 lead heading into singles action.
Im was first off the court in singles as she dispatched Ghilardotti 6-1, 6-0 at the top spot. Sara Abraul downed Lasprilla 6-4, 6-2 at No. 6 and Anaya pulled out a 6-2, 7-5 victory over Wong at No. 2 to tie the score at 3-3.
At the third position, Kurtz came back from a 6-3 loss in the first set to top Aranguren 6-3, 6-2 in the next two sets to put the Eagles up 4-3.
The clincher came at the No. 5 spot when Rico-Jimenez defeated Cardenas 6-2, 6-1 to give the Eagles their fourth win of the season.
The Eagle women take a one day break and will return to the court to face Xavier (La.) at 10 a.m. on Saturday.
