MOBILE, Ala.--It was a tightly contested rematch, but fate was not on the Eagles' side as they fell 5-4 to Berry (Ga.) in the second round of the NAIA National Tournament at the Mobile Tennis Center.
Down 2-1 after doubles play, the Eagles won three singles matches to go up 4-3, but dropped a pair of third set matches for the final margin of victory.
Marga Rico-Jiminez and Sarah Abraul claimed a 8-3 win at No. 3 doubles, and won their respective singles matches, while Kerrin Meisenbach won at No. 4 singles 6-4, 6-1.
The Vikings' Kristin Hunter rallied after dropping the second set 6-0 to defeat Hana Im 6-3, 0-6, 6-2 to win at No. 1 singles, and Anja Chan rallied from 5-3 down in the final set to clinch the win for Berry by topping Lindsey Kurtz 6-1, 5-7, 7-5.
"We played great and fought hard," said head coach David Paschal. "They just beat us. It was a great match. We're dissappointed in the sense that we lost, but I'm very proud of the way they carried themselves, they held their heads high."
The Eagles and Vikings had met back on March 14 when Embry-Riddle claimed a 5-4 win, and Paschal expected more of the same. "I told them before it started that it was going to be a 5-4 match, a six hour match, and it was."
The Vikings will continue to the quarterfinals facing Fresno Pacific (Calif.) while the Eagles end their season at 13-8.
