HATTIESBURG, Miss. - ERAU women's soccer played an aggressive game on a very muddy field Friday night at William Carey and fell to the Crusaders, 4-6.
Despite wet ground conditions, the game got off to a very quick start for both teams. ERAU got on the scoreboard first with a score from Elina Johansson. With defenders all around her, Johansson pushed herself deeper into Crusader territory and launced a shot from well outside the box. A diving goalie wasn't sufficient protection from the offensive attack and the shot hit the back of the net, giving the Eagles a 1-0 lead.
William Carey answered back shortly thereafter with two goals in the seventh and ninth minutes, respectively.
ERAU did not take the 2-1 deficit lightly as Kristen Phelps took a pass from Johansson at 31:17 and knocked it past the goalie to tie the game up at two apiece.
At 23:59, the ball found its way to Lindsey Evans. Evans quickly passed the ball to Johannson for the go-ahead goal and Johansson's second goal of the day.
With the time winding down in the first half, the Crusaders battled back to even the score out at three before the clock ticked to 00:00.
The second half started off in favor for the Crusaders, as they scored two additional goals in the first 20 minutes of the second half.
Senior Valerie Rogers answered back for the Eagles off of a corner kick. Kicking it in from the right side of the goal, Rogers skimmed the ball off of the goalkeeper's hands and knocked it in against the far left goalpost.
The Eagles will be playing on the same field tomorrow against Lambuth University at 5 p.m. CST.
