WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. ? Baree Ward scored a game-high 27 points, including the last three of the game to lead the Northwood men's basketball team to a 76-73 upset of No. 6 Embry-Riddle in Florida Sun Conference play on Wednesday. The loss dropped the Eagles to 20-3 overall and 5-2 in the FSC, while the Seahawks improved to 17-5 and 5-2.
The Seahawks took a five-point lead to start the game, but the Eagles quickly erased the deficit on a
Tyler DeBord layup and a three by
Rocky Pierre who finished the half with 13 points. Neither team led by more than six points in the first frame, which saw six ties and nine lead changes. The Eagles connected on 14 of 24 attempts (58.3 percent) and were 41.7 percent from beyond the arc, but they struggled at the free throw line, shooting only 53.3 percent (8-15).
Embry-Riddle led by five with two and a half minutes to go in the half, but Northwood hit a pair of jumpers and two free throws to pull even with 28 seconds left. The Eagles took the ball down the court and with seven ticks left on the clock, DeBord got the ball out to Cobb who was about three feet past the three-point line, and Cobb buried his second trey of the night to put the Eagles up 41-38 at the half.
The Eagles improved their free throw shooting in the second half, going 11-for-12, but only managed nine shots in 30 attempts from the field. Despite the drop off, the Eagles were still able to surge ahead. After the Seahawks knotted the score for the eighth time with 16:47 to go, the Eagles went on a 15-4 run to take an 11-point lead. But Northwood fought their way back to tie the game at 66 and eventually took a 70-66 lead with 3:07 left.
A DeBord layup and a Lorenzi free throw pulled the Eagles within one, and after a Northwood score from the charity stripe, DeBord made good on two free throws of his own to make the score 71-71. Each team scored a bucket over the next 49 seconds, resulting in a 73-73 deadlock.
With 27 seconds left, Pierre missed a layup and Northwood's DeSean White, who finished with a game-high 14 boards, pulled down the rebound. The Seahawks took the ball the length on the court and Ward, who was fouled on his way to the basket, got the shot to fall to reclaim the lead for Northwood. He made the ensuing free throw, giving the Eagles 13 seconds to get the ball to the other end of the floor and try to tie the game.
Cobb was unable to connect on his three-point attempt with five seconds left, but the DeBord grabbed the offensive rebound and got the ball out to Pierre. Pierre took a couple of dribbles to get outside the three-point line, but his shot was altered and fell short, giving the Seahawks the win.
The Eagles' next game will be at 7 p.m. on Saturday when they travel to Jacksonville to take on Edward Waters.
