DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. ? The fourth-ranked Embry-Riddle men's basketball team connected on 18 three-point baskets en route to a 109-78 win over Johnson & Wales (Fla.) in the final game of the 2008 Carrabba's Classic on Saturday. The Eagles were one three-pointer away from matching the team single-game record of 19 set back in 1998 against Susquehanna (Dec. 29).
For the seventh time this season, junior co-captain Tyler DeBord was the Eagles' leading scorer with 23 points. He was 6 of 8 from the field and was a perfect 10-for-10 from the charity stripe.
Four of the five starters scored in double figures including Eric Lorenzi (19), Rocky Pierre (17) and Denver Cobb (14). Danny Krazit came off the bench to give the Eagles valuable minutes and matched his career best 10 points with a 4-for-5 night, two of which came from beyond the arc.
The Eagles came out shooting at a blistering pace in the first half. They shot 66.7 percent from the field and made 11 of 17 three-pointers (64.7 percent). In addition, the Eagles were perfect from the free throw line, going 10-for-10.
The Wildcats also shot the ball well at 51.5 percent for the half, but the three-point shooting was the difference as the Wildcats only managed four treys compared to 11 by the Eagles.
The game remained close for much of the half, but the Eagles outscored the Wildcats 16-7 over the last 3:40 to take 57-45 lead into the break.
The Eagles wasted little time in extending their 12-point half time lead to 27 points just 13 minutes into the second half. ERAU got the job done on both ends of the floor as the offense tallied 52 points, while the defense held the Wildcats to just 33.
The Embry-Riddle men also did a good job of sharing the basketball. During the first five minutes and 20 seconds of the second half, all five Eagle players on the floor scored and had at least one assist. Of the 24 points scored during that stretch, the Eagles had an assist on all but two field goals, and finished the game with 25 assists.
Saturday's contest was the Eagles' final tune-up before beginning a very challenging Florida Sun Conference schedule. The Eagles open up league play on the road on Wednesday when they travel to Miami to take on defending FSC tournament champion Florida Memorial. The Lions edged the Eagles in the championship game in 2007. Game time is slated for 7 p.m.
