DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. ? Katya Salguero and Emilie Lindstrom each netted two goals to lead eighth-ranked Northwood to a 4-0 win over Embry-Riddle on Friday. Northwood (12-1) extended its record in The Sun Conference to 7-1, while the Eagles are now 5-5 overall and 3-2 in league play.
The Eagle defense kept the Seahawks and the NAIA's leading scorer Lisa Ohberg at bay throughout the first half. Northwood outshot the Eagles 7-3, but only one of those was on frame, while all three of the Eagles' attempts had to be stopped by Northwood's Didi Jurman. Neither team was able to capitalize on its chances resulting in a scoreless tie at the break.
Lindstrom finally broke through for the Seahawks in the 58th minute when she settled the ball after it had bounced around between Northwood and Embry-Riddle players alike, and slipped it just out of Dina Roper's reach to make the score 1-0.
In the 64th minute, Salguero raced in behind the Eagle and got the better of a one-v-one situation with the goalkeeper to make the score 2-0. Lindstrom scored again in the 70th minute and Salguero sealed the win with her second goal of the night with seven minutes left to play.
Despite the outcome on the field, it was still a positive evening for the Blue and Gold who showed their support for the fight against breast cancer by donning pink shirts for their warm-up. There was pink all around the stadium and cancer survivor Sally Sebastyn was on hand to promote the 2008 Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event on Oct. 25. The walk will take place at Riverfront Park in Daytona Beach with registration beginning at 7:30 a.m.
The Eagles look to regroup and close out their 2008 home slate on a high note when they take on St. Thomas at 3 p.m. on Sunday.
