HARDEEVILLE, S.C. ? A penalty kick in the first half gives Embry-Riddle a 1-0 victory over SCAD on Saturday in The Sun Conference action. The Eagles remain undefeated in conference play and improve to 5-1-3 overall, while SCAD falls to 4-5-2.
It was a relatively quiet first half for both teams, as a majority of play took place in the middle of the field. Embry-Riddle fired only four shots, while SCAD was held to zero.
The Eagles dominated possession early in the game, with two close opportunities off headers from AJ Barrett, but both shots curled just wide of the goal.
The Eagles netted the first and only goal in the 22nd minute after Sam Litchfield was taken down inside the Bees' box, resulting in a penalty kick for Embry-Riddle. AJ Barrett lined up for the shot and sent a hard, low-driven ball to the bottom corner of the net for his second goal of the season.
SCAD increased the pressure after the penalty was scored, but the Bees continued to struggle getting past the Eagles' defensive line.
The second half started with a lot more energy at both ends of the field. The Eagles fired four shots on goal in the first eight minutes, but a couple key saves from goalkeeper Robbie Wright kept Embry-Riddle from increasing their lead.
The Bees answered with several solid counter-attacks, including a strong cross from Ellert Hreinsson that landed at the feet of Karl Sjostrom. Sjokstrom drove a hard shot from just outside the six-yard box, but a diving save from Alfredo Diaz kept the Bees off the scoreboard. Twelve mintues later, Sjokstrom hammered another shot, this time from the opposite side of the box, but Diaz jumped again and got a touch on the ball, sending it safely over the crossbar.
Embry-Riddle held a 12-8 advantages in shots, including eight corner kicks, but the early penalty kicked remained the lone goal of the contest.
The Eagles continue conference play on Wednesday when they face Northwood at home at 7 p.m.
