HELENA, Mont. ? The Embry-Riddle men's basketball team suffered its second loss of the season, falling 83-68 to NAIA I Carroll (Mont.) in the final game of the Carroll College Classic on Saturday. The Eagles are now 4-2 on the year, while the Fighting Saints improve their record to 4-0.
The Fighting Saints were on fire from beyond the arc to start the game as they hit five threes in their first seven possessions and were 8-of-15 from long range in the first half. The Eagles were undaunted by the Fighting Saints' quick start and while the offense shot 6-of-9 from the field, the defense forced six Carroll turnovers in a four-minute span, resulting in a 17-17 tie with 13:33 left to play in the half.
The Eagles took a two-point lead on a
Glenn Dalcourt layup at the 12:11 mark, but Carroll answered with a 15-2 run to take a 10-point advantage with just over six minutes remaining in the first frame. Once again the Eagles battled their way back to within one courtesy of 10 first-half points each from Dalcourt and
Tyler DeBord before a Chase Godecke tip-in gave the Fighting Saints a 38-35 edge as the clock expired to end the half.
The Eagles scored the first basket of the second half, but were unable to get ahead of Carroll who shot 50% from the field and hit six of their 13 three-point attempts in that frame. The Fighting Saints held a 12-point lead with 6:49 left to play, but a pair of three-pointers by
Eric Lorenzi and a layup by DeBord cut the lead to four with 5:26 left on the clock.
A layup by Chris Kaschmitter sparked a 12-1 run by Carroll, which allowed the home team to build their lead to as many as 17 points en route to the 83-68 victory.
Lorenzi paced the Eagles' offense with a game-high 28 points. Andy Garland led the way for the Fighting Saints with 20 points, while Josh Saunders added 19 points, and Chad Vaculin contributed 17 points, including five threes.
The Eagles return to the friendly confines of the ICI Center on Friday when they host the Daytona Mitsubishi Shootout. William Carey will face Columbia (Mo.) at 6 p.m. followed by the Eagles versus Graceland at 8 p.m.
