WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. ? The eighth-ranked Embry-Riddle women's tennis team engaged in a six-hour contest and eventually came out on the winning end as the Eagles edged the Northwood Seahawks 5-4 in Florida Sun Conference action on Sunday.
The Seahawks took an early lead earning two doubles points as Alejandra Ripoll and Adriana Herran held off Natalie Anaya and Lindsey Kurtz 9-7, and Michelle Aybar and Didi Jurman bested Sara Abraúl and Marga Rico Jimenez 8-2. The Eagles got a win back at the No. 1 doubles position as Natasa Zoricic and Hana Im topped Fiorella Moggia and Mika Seger 9-8, winning 10-8 in the tiebreaker.
Down 2-1, the Eagles got wins at No. 1 singles as Zoricic blanked Seger 6-0, 6-0, Im defeated Moggia 6-2 7-6 (7-3) and Anaya downed Ripoll 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) to go up 4-2. But the Seahawks got wins at the fourth and fifth spots with Herran topping Kurtz and Aybar topping Rico Jimenez.
The match came down to the battle at the No. 6 spot. Abraúl fell 6-2 in the first set to Shayain Gustavsp. But Abraúl rebounded from the first set loss to take the next two sets 6-3, 6-3, giving the Eagles their third win overall and the second in conference play. Sunday's match was the first of the season for the Seahawks who are now 0-1.
