DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. ? The Embry-Riddle men's basketball team advanced to the semifinals of the Florida Sun Conference tournament with a 92-80 win over Webber International on Tuesday night at the ICI Center. The Eagles will travel to West Palm Beach on Friday for the Final Four where they will face third-seed Warner Southern who downed Florida Memorial 69-64 in the quarterfinals. The semifinals are being hosted by top seed Northwood and the tournament winner receives an automatic bid to the NAIA National Championship in Branson, Mo., Mar. 12-18.
The Eagles trailed early as the Warriors scored six unanswered points to start the game and still maintained a six-point advantage with 12:18 left in the first frame. But as was the case in the previous two meetings this season, the Eagles jumped out to a sizeable lead heading into the halftime break after shooting 65.2 percent (15-23) from the field and 50 percent (3-6) from beyond the arc.
Tyler DeBord, who led all scorers with a 12-point first half, rebounded a Danny Deaver miss and his tip-in tied the score at 14-14 with 10:41 left. That basket sparked a 26-9 Eagle run over the next eight minutes. The Eagles gave up just two points in the last 2:32 of the half and took a 44-29 lead into the locker room at the intermission.
The Eagles got off to a strong start in the second half and eventually built the lead up to 20 points, led by Rocky Pierre who scored 20 points in the second half. But the Eagles had trouble holding onto the basketball and their 11 turnovers helped the Warriors cut the lead to 10 with 2:42 remaining in the game.
The last 2:42 was marked by an Eagle parade to the free throw line as the Warriors began fouling ERAU players with the hopes that a few misses would give them a shot at getting back into the game. But the Eagles made good on eight of their 11 free throw attempts to seal the 12-point win.
Pierre led all scorers with 26 points, just two shy of his season-high, on 8-of-13 from the field and 8-of-11 from the charity stripe. Three other Eagle players scored in double figures, including Eric Lorenzi (12), DeBord (16) and Denver Cobb (11). Cobb also tied his season-high and recorded a game-high six assists.
Michael Floyd was the leading scorer for the Warriors with 20, while Mark Baker added 19 and Halston Schaffer tacked on 17 and pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds.
