DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. ? The Embry-Riddle men's basketball team held Savannah College of Art & Design to just eight points in the first half en route to a 75-63 Florida Sun Conference win, Saturday at the ICI Center. The win improved the Eagles' record to 22-4 overall and puts them in a two-way tie for second place in the league with Warner Southern at 7-3. The Bees fall to 11-15 and 4-6 in league play.
The game started with a three-point basket by Denver Cobb and SCAD's Nick Malloy followed with a jumper to pull SCAD within one. Tyler DeBord hit a layup for the Eagles and the Bees answered with a tip-in and a three pointer to take a 7-5 lead at the 16:32 mark. The trey was the Bees' last basket of the half as a stifling Eagle defense forced 11 turnovers and held SCAD to just 10.3 percent (3-29) shooting in the half, representing the fewest points ever allowed by an ERAU basketball team in a half.
Saturday's game turned out to be a tale of two halves as the Bees rebounded from the first-half shooting slump to outscore the Eagles 55-39 in the second frame. The Eagles had a better shooting percentage in the second half than they did in the first hitting 52.6, up from 50 percent in the first. However, the Bees took 37 shots to the Eagles'19 and connected on 20 of them.
The Bees, led by Xavier Blain-Cruz, who tallied all of his 13 points in the second frame, cut the deficit to 10 points with 3:17 left in the game. But the Eagles went on a 7-0 run to go back up by 17 points with 24 ticks left on the clock. Blain-Cruz hit a three and Chas Johnson hit a pair of free throws to make it a 12-point game at the final buzzer.
Eric Lorenzi led all scorers with 25 points and pulled down a game-high 12 boards to record his sixth double-double of the year. Rocky Pierre had a 17-point night, including three three-pointers and a 6-for-6 performance from the charity stripe, while Cobb and DeBord added 10 points each.
The Eagles begin a two-game road swing at 7 p.m. on Wednesday when they travel to Babson Park to take on Webber International.
