DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. ? The third-ranked Embry-Riddle men's tennis team earned two doubles wins and five wins in singles play to take a 7-2 victory over No. 15 Vanguard, Friday at Embry-Riddle's Crotty Tennis Complex. The win was the 10th of the season for the Eagles, who are now 10-2 on the year, while Vanguard falls to 10-5.
ERAU took an early 2-0 lead as Carlos Bes Comeras and Tomoaki Yasuda blanked Tomas Frank and Garrett Gillon 8-0 at No. 3 doubles and Mislav Hizak and Konstantin Lazarov downed Dominic Stockler and Tino Brodar 8-6 at the top spot. The Lions narrowed the margin to 2-1 as Florian Lemke and Greg Chevalier held off Jan Hoekzema and Istvan Bolgar 8?6.
The first singles match off the court was at the No. 1 position as Hizak bested Lemke 6-1, 6-3. Lazarov followed with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Stockler at No. 2.
Brodar earned the Lions' only singles win as he got the better of a three-set affair against Bes Comeras, winning 7-6 (7-5), 1-6, 6-2.
The clincher for the Eagles came at the No. 6 spot as Bolgar easily dispatched Gillon 6-2, 6-2. Hoekzema topped Chevalier 7-5, 6-4 at No. 4 and Yasuda closed out the win with a 6-2, 7-6 (7-3) victory over Frank at No. 5.
The Eagles close out conference play with back-to-back matches on Wednesday. They will take on Webber International at 12 p.m. followed by a 4 p.m. contest against Warner Southern. Both matches will be played on the road.
