DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. ? The Embry-Riddle and Nova Southeastern men's soccer teams battled hard for 110 minutes, but were unable to break a 1-1 deadlock in the Eagles' home debut.
The tied score was indicative of the overall pattern of Friday night's game. Both teams were evenly matched throughout the contest, with ERAU firing 17 shots to NSU's 15. Neither team completely dominated possession, as the ball consistently moved from one end of the field to the other.
The first goal of the game came off the foot of
Joe Yoffe in the 19th minute. The play started with a short corner kick from
AJ Barrett to Donald, who then sent the ball into NSU's box. After a quick touch by
Marco Harleman, the ball was picked up by Yoffe and sent to the back of the net off his first touch.
The Eagles had several more scoring opportunities in the first half, including two powerful shots by
Sam Litchfield in the 35th minute and a free kick from Yoffe that had everyone holding their breath as the ball floated to the far post, where it just barely missed Barrett who was running in for a header.
With just two minutes remaining in the half, the Sharks evened the score. Tim Taylor passed the ball to David Wahlberg, who found himself in a one-on-one battle with ERAU goalkeeper
Viktor Bergstrand. Wahlberg fired a shot that got past Bergstrand and found the back corner of the net.
The Sharks started the second half with a lot of energy, but the Embry-Riddle defense was able to fight off several of their attacks. Nova Southeastern took eight shots in the second half, including one that was actually netted, but disallowed after a linesman found an NSU player to be offside. Bergstrand tallied four more acrobatic saves in the second half to keep the score tied at one goal apiece.
The Eagles' best chance for a game-winner came with five minutes remaining in regulation. A free kick from
Steven Bohlemann landed at the feet of Yoffe, who turned and ripped a shot straight at NSU netminder Travis Frazier. The ball was juggled around in the box for a minute before Frazier finally gained control of it and booted it to the other side of the field.
Nova Southeastern had a 4-3 edge in shots in overtime, including a very unique play by Romain Onteniente. Onteniente, the 2007 SSC Player of the Year, took a powerful shot from 25 yards out, but the ball hit the crossbar, rebounded off the ground and hit the crossbar again without ever crossing the goal line. Although there were several opportunities in the 20 minute overtime, neither team was able to capitalize, resulting in the 1-1 draw.
Both teams were ranked coming into this game, with the Eagles holding the No. 12 spot in the NAIA national poll and Nova Southeastern ranked ninth overall in NCAA Division II soccer.
The Eagles have won five of the last seven meetings with the Sharks and tied in the other two. Now, both teams will have to add one more "T" to the record book as this close rivalry is perpetuated.
