Eagles Battle Rams to 3-3 Tie

MOBILE, Ala. - Despite playing 110 minutes of soccer, neither Embry-Riddle nor Mobile could break a 3-3 draw. Emotions were running high in Friday night's game, as Mobile was looking to avenge the 2-0 loss to Embry-Riddle that knocked them out of the national tournament last season.

The Rams came out on the front foot, taking 14 shots in the first frame. Mobile got on the scoreboard first after a defensive throw-in resulted in a loose ball inside the Eagles' box. Ruben Diaz recovered the ball and ripped a shot straight to the back of the net to go up 1-0.

The Rams continued to control the momentum for much of the first half, hammering shot after shot at the Embry-Riddle defense. Mobile netted their second goal at 24:13 again, off the foot of Diaz. Onesimus Ikungo sent a long ball from the wing inside to Diaz, who eluded his defender and hit a shot to the middle of the net.

The Eagles finally answered in the 39th minute when team captain Ryan Woods set up for the Eagles' eighth corner kick of the half. He hit a strong ball from the right corner to find Joe Yoffe inside the box. Yoffe flicked a header ball to the near post, which flew in just over the goalkeeper's fingertips.

There was to be a final twist in the first half, as the Rams increased their lead with just two seconds remaining. The play started when Diaz sent the ball down the center of the pitch. The Eagles' defense was unable to intercept the pass and it was quickly captured by Morgan Copes, who found himself charging a wide-open net. Just before the whistle blew, Copes put away goal number three with a hard shot to the bottom corner.

Embry-Riddle was anxious to even the score as soon as the second half started. The Blue and Gold tightened their defense and worked hard to maintain possession. The Eagles second goal came in the 55th minute after Sam Litchfield dribbled through several defenders to find Yoffe running toward the goal. Yoffe picked-up the sharp pass from Litchfield and sent the ball right past the Rams' goalkeeper, notching his third goal of the season.

Just five minutes later, Litchfield netted a goal of his own off an assist from Marco Harleman. Harleman moved the ball down the right side of the field and slipped the ball to Litchfield, who then split the Mobile defense and drove a shot to the far post. The ball struck the post and fell into the back of the net.

The Rams best opportunity to recapture the lead came in the 69th minute of the game. A breakaway by Ikungo pitted Eagles' goalkeeper Viktor Bergstrand in a one-on-one battle with the forward. Ikungo drilled the ball from 10 yards out, but an acrobatic dive from Bergstrand kept the ball out of the net. Bergstrand collected three more saves in the half to keep the Eagles in contention. Mobile held a 25-10 shot advantage in regulation, but the Rams were unable to break the 3-3 deadlock, resulting in extra periods.

Both the Eagles and Rams played strong during the 20 minute overtime, but neither team could capitalize on their offensive drives. Embry-Riddle now holds a 1-1-2 overall record, while Mobile stands at 3-2-2. The Eagles will play No. 1 Auburn-Montgomery Saturday at 5 p.m.
