DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. ? Rachel Jakubowksi, Jessica Deese and Chelsea Brady each netted a goal to lead the Rollins women's soccer team to a 3-0 win over Embry-Riddle, Wednesday at the Embry-Riddle Soccer Stadium. The Tars, ranked 10th in the latest NCAA II national poll, improved their overall record to 7-0-1, while the Eagles fall to 2-3 on the year.
The contest got underway under somewhat blustery conditions with the wind blowing straight down the field from east to west. The first half was marked by possession with the majority of the play taking place in the middle third of the field. The Tars held a 4-2 edge in shots in the first half, but the first shot on frame for either team did not come until the 31st minute. Neither team was able to find the back of the net resulting in a 0-0 tie at the halftime break.
Rollins looked to get on the board early the second frame and had their first opportunity just three minutes into the half as the wind played havoc with a ball flighted into the box and ERAU's Dina Roper used all of her 5-10 frame to get a touch on the ball, but pushed it right to Melissa Doerk in front of the goal. Roper recovered quickly and hauled in Doerk's shot from point blank range, but she was not able to stop the Tars' next attempt on frame as Jakubowski's low, drive from about 25 yards out went just out of Roper's reach and into the net to give Rollins a one-goal lead.
Even with the 1-0 advantage, the Rollins offense continued to pressure the Eagles' defense and with 18 minutes remaining, the Tars extended their lead to 2-0 as Deese ran onto a ball that bounced off an Embry-Riddle defender inside the box and slotted a low ball past Roper into the far side netting.
The Tars sealed the win the 90th minute when Brady headed home Julie Gatt's cross from the right side of the field.
Roper finished the night with six saves in 80 minutes between the pipes and was helped by her defense, which saved three shots off the line. Brelyn Bingham saw 10 minutes of action and recorded one save as did Rollins' Michelle Dillingham who pulled in one save in 74:50 in the nets.
The Eagles open conference play at 5 p.m. on Sunday when they host Warner Southern at the Embry-Riddle Soccer Stadium.
