BABSON PARK, Fla. ? A late goal by
Joe Yoffe lifted the Embry-Riddle men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Webber International on Wednesday. The 24 mile per hour wind gusts in Babson Park played a significant role in the Eagles first conference game of the season, but the Blue and Gold found a way to come out on top.
It was a quiet first half for both teams, with Embry-Riddle taking only one shot and Webber International taking three. Both the Eagles and Warriors had a few good opportunities, but with the wind interference, the players had a difficult time controlling balls in the air, making shot selection quite limited.
The Warriors best scoring opportunity came in the 26th minute, when Adam Bates charged down the middle of the field and fired a shot to the near post. A diving deflection from
Viktor Bergstrand followed by a smart slide tackle by
Peter Masters kept the ball out of Embry-Riddle's net.
The second half started much like the first, with the Eagles and Warriors evenly trading possession and still trying to fight through the wind. WIU increased the pressure, firing six shots in the second period to Embry-Riddle's two.
A series of plays in the 67th minute had the entire Eagle squad holding their breath. First, a corner kick from
AJ Barrett bounced around on the goal line for several seconds before being cleared by the Warriors' defense. Seconds later, a foul by WIU led to a free kick for
Ryan Woods. Woods sent the ball into the Warriors' box, where
Michael Donald dove for the header, but the shot bent just wide of the net.
Yoffe finally broke the deadlock in the 82nd minute when a foul by WIU led to a free kick from 30 yards out. Yoffe sent a hard, low-driven shot right past the Warrior's wall and into the bottom corner of the net for his fourth goal on the season.
With the win, the Eagles improve to 3-1-2 on the season, while Webber International falls to 1-3-1. The Blue and Gold will return home for more conference action when they face Warner Southern on Sunday at 7 p.m.
