BOCA RATON, Fla. - The Fighting Knights of Lynn University scored three goals in the second half to top Embry-Riddle 3-0 on Saturday in Boca Raton, Fla. The Eagles fall to 1-1 on the season, while Lynn remains undefeated with a record of 4-0.
The men took the field under blue skies and a blistering hot sun. It took a few minutes for either team to establish a pattern of play, but as soon as Lynn fired their first shot at 25:25, the momentum stayed with them for the duration of the game.
The Fighting Knights took 12 shots in the first half, with their closest one coming late in the 45th minute when Jean Alexandre recovered the ball in the Eagles' box and ripped a shot to the bottom corner that missed by just inches. Despite the 12-2 shot advantage held by Lynn, the Knights could not get past the sharp play of Embry-Riddle goalkeeper
Viktor Bergstrand. Bergstrand tallied four saves in the half, two of them one-on-one, to keep the score tied at zero heading into the break.
Lynn continued to pressure early in the second, but much like the first half, they struggled to turn their advantage into a goal. The Eagle defense held off three attacks in the first ten minutes and Bergstrand had four more saves before Lynn finally found the back of the net in the 75th minute. The first goal came after Alexandre crossed the ball to Tyrell Burgess, who one-touched it in on the near post. The second and third goals came shortly after at 80:22 and 84:45.
The Eagles had several strong possessions of their own, but the well organized defense of Lynn proved difficult to beat. The Eagles fought hard till the final whistle blew, but the Blue and Gold were unable to match the level of play exhibited by Lynn. The Fighting Knights now lead the all-time series 6-0.
Embry-Riddle will open their home schedule on Friday, Sep. 12 against Nova Southeastern. Game-time is set for 7 p.m.
