JACKSONVILLE, Fla. ? The seventh-ranked Embry-Riddle men's basketball team, led by a game-high 20 points from
Denver Cobb, improved its record to 18-2 overall and 4-0 in The Sun Conference with an 85-72 win over Edward Waters on Saturday.
Cobb had a solid overall game, finishing with five rebounds, four assists and three steals. Overall, the Eagles had a balanced performance as six of the 10 players that took the floor finished with double figures.
The Eagle offense came out firing on all cylinders in the first half, shooting 60.6 percent (20-33) from the field.
Tyler DeBord and Cobb led the attack for the Blue and Gold, registering 10 points apiece in the first frame.
ERAU outscored the Tigers 11-2 in the first four minutes of play and never looked back. Edward Waters cut the margin to four with 15:29 left in the half, but a DeBord jumper ignited an 18-5 run that increased the Eagle lead to 32-18 with 9:54 remaining in the half.
Despite the sizeable advantage, the Eagles continued to work hard on both ends of the floor. The defense held the Tigers to just three points over the next six minutes, while the offense tallied 13 points during that stretch and took a 49-29 lead into the locker room at the half.
Heading into the halftime break, the Eagles seemed to have the game in hand, but the start of the second half saw a shift in favor of Edward Waters. The Blue and Gold struggled to find its offense, and the Tigers capitalized, making four of their first seven shot attempts to make the score 49-39 with 16:36 left to play.
The Eagles were held scoreless until the 15-minute mark when DeBord was fouled on his way to the basket. The senior knocked down both free throws, sparking a 21-8 run that gave the Eagles their largest lead of the night of 24 points (73-49) with 9:30 to go.
The advantage gave some of the starters an opportunity to rest and the bench, led by
Ray Graham's 13 points, contributed 27 points in the game and held off the Tigers down the stretch to help the Eagles to the win.
The Eagles continue their three-game road swing on Wednesday when they travel to Babson Park to take on Webber International. Game time is slated for 7 p.m.
