DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle men's soccer team recorded its second shutout in a row and seventh of the season with a 2-0 win over Northwood, Tuesday at the Embry-Riddle Soccer Stadium. The win helped the Eagles (9-3-2) replace the Seahawks at the top of the league standings with a 4-0-2 conference record. The Seahawks (8-4-1) slipped to fourth place in the conference race with a 5-2 league mark.
The shutout was a true team effort as the Eagles limited the Seahawks to just six shots in the match, only one of which was on frame.
The first half was marked by a defensive stalemate with more corner kicks than shot attempts in the opening minutes. Of the six combined shots taken by Northwood and Embry-Riddle, only one came close to hitting the mark when
Matthias Klatt's header went off the post and was cleared out of danger by the Northwood defense. As the half progressed, both teams brought in new personnel in an attempt to get on the scoreboard, but neither team was able to break through, resulting in a scoreless tie at the half time break.
The second half saw Eagles step up the pace on offense, matching their first half total of four shots in the first nine minutes of the second frame. ERAU's persistence finally paid off in the 55th minute as they ended the stalemate on a set piece. Just a few seconds after taking his first corner kick of the game,
Luke Baker returned to the left side of the field for his second corner of the night. He lifted a ball into the penalty area where six Eagles awaited inside the six-yard box. One of those players was
Alexis Pradie, and although he lost his footing, Pradie maintained his focus and headed home his fourth goal of the year to put the Eagles up 1-0.
The Eagles' second goal came with just over six and half minutes left to play.
Michael Donald collected the ball just a few yards off the left sideline and bent the ball around a Northwood defender to
Ryan Woods who had made a diagonal run into the box. Woods, unfazed by the sharp angle he was faced with, ripped a shot across the face of the goal into the far side netting to put the game out of the Seahawks' reach.
The Eagles take a one-week break before traveling to Lakeland to take on league newcomer Southeastern at 7 p.m.
