MIAMI GARDENS,
Fla. – After a scoreless first
half the Embry-Riddle women's soccer team netted two goals in the second period
to come away with a 2-0 result over Florida Memorial on Friday. The Eagles,
6-4 overall and 3-0 in The Sun Conference, won their fourth game in a row,
while the Lions fall to 3-4-1, 0-1-1.
The Lions battled ERAU to a 0-0 draw at halftime after a
downpour 10 minutes into the set slowed play and limited chances on the Florida
Memorial side. The Blue and Gold had 17 shots in the opening period but could
not put one past FMU's keeper, Katelyn Butler, who saved eight balls during the
first half.
The half ended after a Lion defender took down Elina Johansson in the penalty box as the Eagles were rewarded with a penalty kick.
Unfortunately, the PK was wide of the mark to leave the game scoreless.
Almost fourteen minutes went by in the second frame when
freshman Allison Schultz banged home a Cecilie Henriksen corner kick for the
first score of the game, and the first goal of Schultz's career.
ERAU added their second goal in the 65th minute after
Johansson crossed the ball to Hanna Lundqvist who flicked the ball over the keeper's head to account for the
2-0 final.
Dina Roper was fairly untested in goal, saving two balls as
she played the entire 90 minutes. The Eagle defense did a superb job of
restricting Lions' chances as they came away with their fifth shutout of the
season.
Embry-Riddle held the advantage in shots (33-7) and corner
kicks (9-0), while the Lions were called for 18 fouls to the Eagles' 13.
The Eagles remain in south Florida
for a Sunday contest with St. Thomas
at 2:00 p.m.
