FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- The Embry-Riddle men's soccer team rebounded from Tuesday's loss to Flagler to take a 2-0 win over another NCAA II opponent, Nova Southeastern (6-5) on Saturday. The 15th-ranked Eagles scored once in each half to improve their overall record to 7-3-1 on the year.
The Eagles looked to score early and pressured the Shark defense from the first whistle, forcing NSU goalkeeper Lyle Howe to come up with four saves in the first 18 minutes of play. The Blue and Gold finally put one past Howe in the 19th minute, off the boot of leading goal scorer
Ryan Maloney.
Ryan Woods slotted the ball through to Maloney running across the top of the box and Maloney's shot from the edge of the penalty area found the bottom of left corner of the goal, giving the junior his 11th goal of the season.
ERAU had a few more opportunities to add to its tally, but Howe managed to keep the ball out of the net, limiting the Eagles to a one-goal lead at the half.
The score stayed at 1-0 in favor of the Eagles until the 65th minute.
Robin Rosen caught the NSU defense off guard and slipped a ball to
Phil Middleton on the run. Middleton's first touch from about 10 yards out beat Howe to extend the Eagle margin to two goals.
Howe finished with eight saves on the night as the Eagles held a decisive 10-2 advantage in shots on goal. Howe's Embry-Riddle counterpart,
Viktor Bergstrand, turned back both Shark attempts to notch his fifth shutout of the year.
The Eagles return to conference play at 4 p.m. on Wednesday when they travel to Miami to take on St. Thomas.
