DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Embry-Riddle women's soccer team accomplished something Wednesday night that they had not been able to do since 2005, beat the Savannah College of Art and Design Bees. Using two goals from junior
Elina Johansson and one from freshman
Allison Schultz the Eagles (8-4, 5-0) were able to shutout SCAD (5-6, 3-2) 3-0.
Johansson waited only 59 seconds before pounding home her 13th goal of the season off a
Krizzy Menez cross into the box to put the Blue and Gold up 1-0.
Schultz scored her second career goal in the 11th minute after Johansson managed to get her head on a corner kick as the ball wound up at Schultz feet. Schultz managed to put the ball past SCAD keeper Stephanie Foster for the 2-0 lead that ERAU was able to take into halftime.
SCAD looked to find equalizers in the second frame but were never able to put anything substantial together as both the Eagle defenders and keeper
Dina Roper did a great job at keeping the Bee forwards guessing for the entire game.
In the 70th minute Johansson scored her second goal of the contest after
Madeleine Edbom passed the ball to her just outside the 18-yard box. Johansson weaved past two SCAD defenders and slid the ball past the goalkeeper for her 14th goal of the season. With that goal Johansson became the Eagles' all-time leading goal scorer with 44 career goals, surpassing
Jessica Garcia's mark of 43 set in 2006.
The 3-0 final was the sixth shutout of the season for Roper and the Eagles as they grabbed a share of first place in The Sun Conference with a 5-0 mark.
The Eagles were outshot by the Bees 17-13 but Roper managed to save 10 balls on the night en route to the victory.
ERAU will take a week off before they host Sun Conference opponent Johnson & Wales on Friday the 16th at 7 p.m. The game will be played at the Embry-Riddle Soccer Stadium.
