DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – For the second time in as many contests, the outcome of an Embry-Riddle (12-3-4) men's soccer match was decided from the penalty spot. After besting St. Thomas to advance to finals of The Sun Conference tournament last Friday, the top-seeded Eagles found themselves in the same situation a week later, this time against second seeded Savannah College of Art and Design (12-3-3). Although the opponent was different, the result was the same as the Eagles topped the Bees 4-2 in penalty kicks to claim the 2009 conference tournament title.
After a scoreless first half, SCAD netted the first goal of the game in the 49th minute when Ryan Middleton's shot beat Bergstrand to the lower left corner.
After employing a more direct style of play for the first 48 minutes, SCAD settled into more of a possession game following their goal. The Eagles continued to pressure the SCAD defense and eventually their persistence paid off.
Just 12 minutes after SCAD got on the board,
Luke Baker won the ball on the left side of the field and, after weaving his way through a pair of SCAD defenders, he ripped a shot from about 23 yards out. SCAD keeper Robbie Wright, playing off his line, got a hand to the ball but it was not enough to stop Baker's rocket into the upper left corner, which tied the game at 1-1.
Both teams continued their pursuit of the game-winner through the remainder of regulation and two overtime periods, but despite a few close calls, including a
Ryan Maloney shot that whistled just wide of Wright's goal and three shots on frame by SCAD, the game remained tied after 110 minutes, resulting in the penalty shootout.
Richard Langthorne was the first to step to the penalty spot for SCAD, but he lifted his attempt over the goal to open the door for the Eagles.
Michael Donald buried his attempt to put the Blue and Gold up 1-0. Ellert Hreinsson was also successful on his try for the Bees, but
JL Wilson reclaimed the advantage for the Eagles by beating Wright low.
The next kicker was SCAD goal scorer Middleton who hit a shot toward the upper right corner, but Bergstrand was up to the task and made a diving save to his right to keep the penalty kick score at 2-1.
Ryan Maloney increased the Eagle advantage to 3-1 meaning the Eagles only needed one more successful penalty to move on. After Brinton Nute made his attempt, ERAU's
Matthias Klatt calmly slotted home ERAU's fourth penalty of the night to give the Blue and Gold the conference crown.
Bergstrand finished with a season-high eight saves, while Wright finished with two saves on the night.
The Eagles await the announcement of the national tournament field on Sunday afternoon to determine their opponent and destination in the NAIA National Tournament Opening Round to be played on Nov. 21.
