DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- The Embry-Riddle Eagles fell to the Savannah College of Art and Design Bees Saturday afternoon at the ICI Center in the championship match of The Sun Conference Tournament, presented by Sunset Harbor Yacht Club.
After posting the best conference record in Eagles' volleyball history at 18-0, the Eagles headed into the tournament as the No. 1 seed and defeated the No. 5 seed, Warner, in the semifinal round of the tournament Friday, Nov. 13 at the ICI Center.
The Blue and Gold suited up this afternoon to take on the No. 2 Bees in The Sun Conference championship match, but were unable to bring home the conference crown, as SCAD won their fifth tournament title.
The Sun Conference Newcomer of the Year, Jordan Holcomb, led all hitters on the offensive end, tallying 14 kills while also contributing seven digs from the backrow. Three SCAD players picked up double-digit kills, including setter Allison Regas who recorded 10 kills for the Bees.
SCAD came out firing in set one, marking a 15-10 lead halfway through the contest and never looked back. The bees took set one 25-18 after an Eagle attack error.
Set two saw the Bees up 6-2, but the Eagles fought their way back and tied it up at 10-10. A kill from SCAD's Courtney Shelton sparked a 7-0 run in the final points of the set, putting the Bees at 25 and the Eagles at 18 on the scoreboard at the end of set two.
The Bees headed into the third set with determination and the momentum, jumping out to 7-4 lead over the Eagles. The Eagles pulled within two, but that was as close as they would get for the remainder of the match, as the Bees held on and pulled out a 25-18 victory in the final set.
The Eagles ended their season with an overall record of 24-8 and a perfect mark in The Sun Conference at 18-0. Seniors Kristen Hassett, Savannah Trakes, and Rebecca Heller ended their senior campaigns as regular season conference champions, but unable to make a run at the NAIA national tournament.
