DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. ? Embry-Riddle senior
Tyler DeBord tallied a game-high 24 points to lead the Embry-Riddle men's basketball team to a 75-60 win over Edward Waters on Wednesday. DeBord also topped all players on the glass grabbing 11 rebounds to complete his 10th double-double of the season as the Eagles improved to 21-6 overall and 7-4 in The Sun Conference.
A strong offensive start propelled the Eagles to a 23-10 lead seven minutes into the contest.
Denver Cobb led the way connecting on all five shot attempts in that stretch, including a lay-up, two free throws and two three-point baskets.
But the advantage was short-lived as a Daniel Grant three-pointer began a 15-6 Tiger run to make the score 29-28 in favor of the Eagles with 6:32 left in the half. William Walter-Brown's jumper at the 4:50 mark tied the score at 32, but ERAU got five points in a row from DeBord to pull ahead by five points and although they were unable to score over the last 2:12, the Eagles went into the halftime break with a 37-35 lead.
The start of the second half saw both teams go back and forth, resulting in a 39-39 tie with 19:01 left to play. Once again DeBord hit a lay-up to put the Blue and Gold back in front and the Eagles proceeded to outscore the Tigers 11-2 over the next three and a half minutes to increase the margin to 51-41.
With 15:16 left to play, Edward Waters' Tim Mincey picked up his fifth foul and the Eagles took advantage of the Tigers' lack of size inside to score 20 points in the paint in the second half alone.
Shooting 51.9 percent in the second frame, the Eagles led by as many as 18 points before pulling out the 75-60 win.
The Eagles had four players in double figures, including DeBord,
Eric Lorenzi (15), Cobb (12) and
Danny Krazit (10).
Johnny Nelson (19) was the high scorer for the Tigers who are now 11-13 overall and 1-10 in league.
The Eagles' next game will be on Feb. 14 when they host Webber International at 7 p.m.
