DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. ? The Embry-Riddle men's basketball team (22-6) avenged a loss to Webber International (19-8) earlier in the season with a 75-70 win over the Warriors, Saturday at the ICI Center.
Tyler DeBord led the way for the Blue and Gold with 18 points and a season-high 17 rebounds as the Eagles move into a two-way tie in The Sun Conference with Warriors, with both teams carrying 8-4 league records.
The first half of the ballgame belonged to the Eagles who outdid the Warriors in just about every category. The Blue and Gold shot 64.3 percent (18-28) from the field, including a 50 percent (4-8) clip from beyond the arc. The Warriors had the advantage at the charity stripe going 6-for-13 compared to Eagles who were 3-for-8. But the Eagle defense limited the Warriors to no three-pointers and just 38.5 percent (10-26) from the field, and dominated the visitors on the boards, out-rebounding WIU 23-8.
The Eagles held a three-point lead at the 14:46 mark, but that lead quickly jumped to 11 points on a DeBord jumper and back-to-back three-pointers by
Eric Lorenzi and
Denver Cobb. Embry-Riddle maintained its 11-point cushion until a Lorenzi lay-up and a
Ray Graham dunk ignited an 11-4 run that increased the Eagle advantage to 18 points.
The Warriors struggled to find their offense, making just three baskets in the last 5:26 of the half, resulting in a 43-26 Eagle lead at the break.
The offensive fortunes of both teams were reversed in the second half as the Warriors shot 56.3 percent, while the Eagles managed to connect on just 33.3 percent of their attempts from the field.
Webber International wasted little time in cutting into the Eagle lead, as a 20-6 run pulled the Warriors to within five points with 13 minutes left to play. ERAU withstood the barrage and built the lead back up to nine, but the Warriors continued to pressure the Eagles on both ends of the floor and found themselves trailing by just three points with 3:48 left to play.
Although they struggled from the field in the second half, the Eagles picked up their shooting from the free throw line. The Eagles were able to rebound their misses and drew fouls on their second chance opportunities resulting in 14 trips to the charity stripe in the last 3:26. They connected on 11 of those free throw attempts and allowed no offensive rebounds by the Warriors down the stretch to pull out the win.
Four players turned in double-digit scoring performances for the Eagles, including DeBord, Lorenzi (16), Cobb (16) and Graham (10). Graham and Lorenzi each had seven rebounds and Lorenzi finished the night with a game-high four assists.
Brandon Streeter was the leading scorer for the Warriors with 17, while Tyrell Harper and Halston Shaffer added 15 and 11 points, respectively.
The Eagles play their last home game of the regular season against Warner at 7 p.m. on Wednesday.
