DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. ? The Embry-Riddle men's basketball team suffered its second loss at home this season, falling to Warner, 63-60, in the Eagles' final regular home game of 2008-09, Wednesday at the ICI Center. The Eagles, who played in front of a facility record 1,952 fans, fall into a four-way tie for second in The Sun Conference standings at 8-5 and are 22-7 overall. The Royals are also 8-5 in the league and are 19-10 overall.
The Eagles came out of the gates slowly with three missed shots and a turnover on their first four possessions. But the Eagles settled into their offense and after evening the score at 2-2 at the 17:23 mark, they went on a 13-0 run to lead 15-2 with 10:55 remaining in the half.
The Eagle defense held the Royals to just four points in the first 11 and a half minutes of play and the offense built the lead up to 17 points with 8:30 to play in the first frame. But the next three and a half minutes saw the Eagles struggle from the field as they managed just one lay-up during that stretch. ERAU's shooting woes allowed the Royals to get back into the game and Warner closed the gap to five points with 3:11 remaining in the half.
Tyler DeBord's lay-up broke the Eagles' scoring drought and a
Glenn Dalcourt three-pointer and a
Ryan Christian lay-up helped the Eagles increase the lead to 10 points and they took a 32-24 advantage into the locker room at the half.
The Eagles shot 58.3 percent in the first half but made only 30.3 percent of their shots in the second. The Royals, on the other hand, rebounded from their 30.4 percent first-half performance and went 17-33 (51.5 percent) in the second half.
Warner tied the game a 38-38 with 13:13 left to play and took a two-point lead on their next possession. DeBord's dunk pulled the Eagles level at 40, but Mirnes Islamovic answered with a jumper that started a 9-0 Royal run.
The Royals led by 10 (57-47) at the 5:08 mark, but the Eagles battled back to cut the lead to four with 3:10 left on the clock.
At the 1:28 mark, the Royals began a parade to the free throw line as Preston Adams drew a foul and sank both free throws to put Warner up by six. Debord's second dunk of the night pulled the Eagles back to within four, but another pair of Adams free throws made the score 63-57 in favor of the visitors with 46 seconds remaining.
Brandon Caputo went 1-of-2 from the charity stripe on the Eagles' next trip down the court to make it a five-point game. On the Royals' next possession, ERAU elected to foul Islamovic who missed both of his free throw attempts, giving the Eagles a chance to further close the gap.
Denver Cobb's lay-up made the score 63-60, and with 22 seconds remaining Cobb committed his third foul of the night to put Lamont Houston on the line. Houston also missed his free throws and with 12 seconds left, the Eagles grabbed the rebound and took the ball down the court with a chance to tie the game and send it into overtime. But Caputo's three-point attempt missed the mark and the rebound fell to Adams who held onto the ball in the closing seconds to preserve the win.
Cobb paced the Eagle offense with 16 points, while DeBord added 14 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.
Eric Lorenzi tallied 11 points and eight rebounds and Caputo contributed 10 points off the bench.
Adams led all scorers with 18 points, while Derrell Henderson finished the night with 12 points and 12 boards.
The Eagles close out the regular season slate on the road on Saturday when they travel to West Palm Beach to take on Northwood. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
