Eagles Suffer Overtime Loss to Bees, 83-80

SAVANNAH, Ga. ? The Embry-Riddle men's basketball team suffered its second straight conference loss on Wednesday, falling to the Savannah College of Art and Design, 83-80 in overtime. The loss puts the Eagles at 19-6 overall and 5-4 in The Sun Conference, while the Bees improved to 15-10 and 3-6 in the league with the win.

Both teams were fairly evenly matched in the first half of play, which saw four ties and 11 lead changes. Both teams made 12 baskets with the Bees converting on three three-pointers and the Eagles making two of their six long-range attempts. The difference in the first half came at the free throw line where the Eagles connected on 10 of their 15 trips to the charity stripe, while Bees only had five attempts, connecting on four.

The Eagles and the Bees traded baskets to start the contest and neither team led by more than three points in the first eight minutes of play. At the 12:02 mark, Eric Lorenzi hit a jumper that sparked a 9-0 Eagle run over the next two minutes. But the Bees battled back to tie the score at 22 and took a 24-22 lead at the 7:46 mark.

With 6:04 left in the half, Lorenzi got the ball in to Tyler DeBord on the inside and DeBord's lay-up triggered another run that eventually led to a five-point Eagle advantage heading into the halftime break.

The Eagles built the lead to 10 in the first two minutes of the second half, but the lead was short-lived as three missed baskets in a row and turnovers on three straight Eagle possessions, allowed the Bees to erase the deficit and take a one-point lead with 12:05 left in regulation.

The remaining 7:55 of the half was a see-saw battle, as evidenced by seven lead changes and five ties. The Bees went up by three on a Xavier Blain-Cruz three-pointer with 1:37 left, but on their next trip down the court, the Eagles got the ball into DeBord who made a lay-up and a free throw to draw the Eagles level with 1:08 on the clock.

SCAD had a chance to reclaim the lead with 45 seconds left, but Ron Kus missed a lay-up that was rebounded by the Eagles. DeBord missed a lay-up of his own that would have put the Eagles ahead with 27 ticks on the clock, but the Eagles got another chance after the ball went off a SCAD player out of bounds on the rebound attempt with six seconds left.

After timeouts by each team, the Eagles got the ball in to Cobb who had to race over the half court line to corral the pass. Cobb used all six seconds to get into a position to hit the game-winning shot, but his attempt fell short of the mark sending the game into overtime.

Embry-Riddle scored the first four points in extra time, but once again SCAD found a way to even the score and moved ahead by two with 45 seconds to play. Lorenzi had a chance to tie the game from the free throw line with 36 seconds on the clock, but he missed both free throw attempts and the Bees capitalized by making free throws of their own at the other end of the court to increase their lead to four.

With 18 seconds left, Krazit found Lorenzi on the perimeter and the junior nailed the three-pointer to pull the Blue and Gold back within one. The Eagles then elected to foul Kus on the next SCAD possession and Kus knocked down both free throws to make the score 83-80.

The made free throws left the Eagles with nine seconds left to get the ball down the court to try to tie the game. The ball fell to DeBord on the outside but the senior was unable to knock down the three-pointer to tie, giving the Bees the win.

Lorenzi closed out the game with his eighth double-double of the year on a team-high 26 points and 11 rebounds, while DeBord added 22 points and nine boards and Ray Graham came off the bench to add 11 points and six rebounds. Blain-Cruz tallied a game-high 28 points for the Bees, while Christian Moore and Nick Maloy finished with 14 and 13 points, respectively.

The Eagles return to action at 7 p.m. on Saturday when they travel to Miami to take on Florida Memorial.
