Second Half Comeback Lifts Eagles to 55-51 Win Over Florida Memorial

OPA LOCKA, Fla. ? The Embry-Riddle men's basketball team rebounded from an 11-point halftime deficit to top Florida Memorial 55-51 in Sun Conference action on Saturday. The win put an end to the Eagles' two-game losing streak and improved their overall record to 20-6 and their league record to 6-4.

Three-pointers were the story of the first half for the Lions who connected on six of 11 attempts from beyond the arc. Rodrick Davis led the way with 14 points on five of six from the field, four of which were long range shots.

The Eagles scored the first points of the game from the charity stripe but turned the ball over on the next four possessions, allowing the Lions to jump out to an 8-2 lead. ERAU managed to knot the score at 15 with 7:38 left in the half, but they continued to be plagued by miscues as they turned the ball over 14 times in the first half, which allowed the Lions to add 19 points to their tally.

Davis' third three of the half ignited an 18-7 Lion run that led to a 33-22 Florida Memorial lead at the half.

The Lions hit five of their first nine shots in the second half, including three-pointers by Davis and Mark Rolle, and appeared to be in control with a 15-point lead with 17:09 to play. In addition to the sizeable lead, the Lions also had the support of the more than 1,000 Florida Memorial fans in attendance for the Lions' homecoming celebration.

But the Eagles were undaunted by the deficit and the atmosphere, and began their comeback at the 14:50 mark when Tyler DeBord made a lay-up to make the score 45-32. The basket sparked a 16-3 run that allowed ERAU to tie the game at 48-48 with 5:15 left on the clock.

Over the next three minutes, neither team was able to add to its tally. Florida Memorial finally ended the stalemate on an Andre Thomas free throw that gave the Lions a 49-48 lead at the 2:09 mark.

Free throws proved to be the difference down the stretch as neither team scored a field goal during the run of play for the remainder of the contest. The advantage at the charity stripe went to the Eagles who were able to get the ball into the hands of their top free-throw shooter, Denver Cobb, who is averaging 85 percent on the year. Cobb accounted for six of the Eagles' final eight free throws and finished the game at a perfect 11-of-11 from the line.

The Lions missed their last three attempts from the field (all three-pointers) and went just two-for-five from the free throw line to help the Eagles secure the win.

Cobb finished as the Eagles' high scorer with 17 points and six rebounds. DeBord and Eric Lorenzi each tallied a double-double, recording 11 points, 10 rebounds and 14 points, 13 rebounds, respectively.

Davis had 17 points for the Lions who fell to 5-15 on the year and 4-6 in league play.

The Eagles return to the friendly confines of the ICI Center on Wednesday to face Edward Waters. Game time is slated for 7 p.m.
