DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. ? The Embry-Riddle men's tennis team served up a 9-0 shutout of St. Thomas in the Eagles' Sun Conference opener, Sunday at the Crotty Tennis Complex. The Eagles are 1-0 on the year, while the Bobcats fall to 0-1.
The first match to finish was at No.3 doubles as junior
Istvan Bolgar and newcomer
Peter Francis topped Federico Acevedo and Ricardo Marquez 8-3. Next off the court were
Carlos Bes Comeras and
Jan Hoekzema who notched an 8-5 win over Adrian Escarate and Andrew Rifkin at No. 1. The third doubles match saw the St. Thomas team of Jeremy Bache and William Fountain battle back from being down 7-4 to win two straight games and pull within one point at 7-6. But the Eagles'
Adrian Bayh and
Charlie Rice rebounded to win the match 8-6, giving the Blue and Gold a 3-0 lead heading into doubles play.
Rice made quick work of Acevedo at No. 5 singles with a 6-1, 6-1 win to increase the Eagle lead to 4-0. The clincher came at the second position as Hoekzema bested Bache 6-4, 6-2.
Bes Comeras downed Escarate 6-3, 6-1 at No. 1 and Bayh won a tough battle at No. 3, downing Fountain 7-6 (7-4), 6-2. Bolgar easily defeated Kenneth Evans 6-0, 6-0 at the sixth position and Francis sealed the win coming from a set down to top Andrew Rifkin 3-6, 6-0, 6-3.
The Eagles take their first road trip of the year when they travel to Jacksonville to take on Jacksonville University. Match time is scheduled for noon.
