DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. ? Despite holding a 2-1 advantage after doubles, the eighth-ranked Embry-Riddle women's tennis team (3-5) was unable to sustain the lead, falling 5-4 to NCAA No. 15 Barry (8-4), Saturday at Embry-Riddle's Crotty Tennis Complex.
The Eagles earned wins at the top two doubles spots as
Natasa Zoricic and
Hana Im handed Angie Wershel and Yulia Kashelkina their third loss of the season with an 8-5 decision.
Mathilda Engstrom and
Julija Stojkovska earned their first doubles win of the year, topping Mei-Jing Ang and Caroline Wendling 8-5 at No. 2.
The match at No. 3 went down to the wire. ERAU's
Sara Abraul and
Marga Rico Jimenez went up 8-7, but the Barry duo of Berit Peterson and Laime Contrera came back to tie the score and won the match with a 7-1 victory in the tie-breaker.
Contreras secured the Buccaneers' second point with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Engstrom at the No. 4 spot and Wendling put Barry ahead with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Stojkovska at No. 3 singles. Barry scored their fourth point of the day when Werschel topped Zoricic 6-4, 7-6 (0) at No. 1 singles, but Im closed the gap to 4-3 with hard-fought, three set victory (2-6, 7-6 (2), 7-6 (4)) win over Kashelkina at the second spot.
Abraul lost the first set to Peterson and battled hard in the second, but was unable to pull out the win, allowing Peterson to clinch the team victory with a 6-1, 7-5 decision.
Rico Jimenez closed out the match on a high note for the Eagles as she recorded a 3-6, 6-4, 10-2 win over Julie Cadet at No. 5.
The Eagles next match will be at 10 a.m. on Monday when they host Georgetown (Ky.) at the Crotty Tennis Complex.
