Eagles Earn Win No. 10 With Victory Over Oklahoma Baptist

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. ? With two starters out of the line-up due to injury, the Embry-Riddle men's tennis team sported a new starting six on Wednesday against Oklahoma Baptist. But the personnel changes did not affect the Eagles' winning ways as they improved to 10-2 with a 9-0 victory over the Bison.

Two of the Eagles' three doubles teams were first time pairings as Istvan Bolgar and Peter Francis held down the No. 2 spot and Charlie Rice and Zander Woodford-Smith were in at No. 3, marking Woodford-Smith's first doubles start of the year. Bolgar and Francis were in sync almost immediately, taking an easy 8-1 win over Peter McCorkle and Sergej Babic. The only constant in the line-up was Jan Hoekzema and Carlos Bes Comeras at No. 1, and the Eagle duo downed Bruno Scacalossi and Gustavo Schaefer 8-4. Woodford-Smith and Rice completed the doubles sweep with an 8-3 win over Scott Milner and Mitch Canavan, giving the Eagles a 3-0 lead heading into doubles play.

In his first match of the year at the No. 3 spot, Rice served aces on each of his first four serves and didn't look back, cruising to a 6-1, 6-2 victory over  McCorkle.

Bes Comeras, playing in his usual position at the top spot, recorded the clinching point as he easily breezed past Babic 6-1, 6-0.

Woodford-Smith also moved up in the line-up to No. 4 and after falling behind 3-0 in the first set, he rallied to win the set 6-4 and followed with a 6-0 win in the second to put the Eagles up 6-0.

Bolgar got an easy 6-2, 6-2 win over Milner at No. 5  and Francis had little trouble adjusting to his first match in the second spot as he topped Scacalossi 6-4, 6-3.

Junior Alex Perez made his debut in the Embry-Riddle starting line-up and took full advantage of the opportunity with a straight set (6-4, 6-4) victory over Michael Canavan at No. 6 to seal the win.

The Eagles return to conference play on Mar. 25 when they host Webber International at the Crotty Tennis Complex.
