DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. ? The Embry-Riddle women's tennis team came out on the winning end of a battle between two Top 15 programs as the 11th-ranked Eagles defeated the 14th-ranked Seahawks 6-3 in Sun Conference action on Saturday. The Eagles (7-6) are now in sole control of second place in the league race at 3-1, while the Seahawks (8-4) are third with a 3-2 conference record.
Northwood scored the first point of the match as the doubles team of Adi Jurman and Kirsten Stickney posted an 8-4 win over the Eagles'
Sara Abraul and
Marga Rico Jimenez.
Natasa Zoricic and
Hana Im pulled the Eagles level with an 8-4 win over Mikaela Seger and Fiorella Moggia at the No. 1 doubles position.
Mathilda Engstrom and
Julija Stojkovska broke the deadlock as they took an early 4-1 lead en route to an 8-4 victory over Northwood's Marilyn Scerri and Eva Neujebauer to give the Eagles a 2-1 lead.
Playing at No. 6 singles, Engstrom was the first to finish her match, easily getting by Tesu Svenson 6-1, 6-1. Zoricic was not far behind as her 6-2, 6-0 win over Seger at the top spot gave the Eagles a 4-1 advantage.
The Seahawks got a point back at No. 5 as Jurman topped Abraul 6-1, 6-3, but Stojkovska closed the door on any comeback attempt as she tallied the Eagles' fifth and deciding point with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Scerri at No. 3.
The Eagles and the Seahawks split the two remaining matches with Neujebauer besting Rico Jimenez 6-1, 6-0, while Im rebounded from a 6-2 loss in the first set to down Moggia 6-1, 7-5 in the remaining two sets.
The Embry-Riddle women close out league play at 4 p.m. on Monday when they host Warner at the Crotty Tennis Complex.
