MOBILE, Ala. ? The Embry-Riddle men racked up a win in their first match at the NAIA National Championships at the Copeland Cox Tennis Center in Mobile, Ala. on Wednesday. Despite a four-hour rain delay, the second-seeded Eagles maintained their focus and won all three doubles matches and garnered wins at the No. 1 and No. 6 singles spots to oust Berry, 5-0.
Carlos Bes Comeras and
Jan Hoekzema were the first to finish their doubles match against Stan Aterna and Daniel Mician. The Embry-Riddle tandem was down 5-4 before rain interrupted play, but coming out of the rain delay the Eagles broke the Berry duo to tie the score at 5-5 and rattled off three more points in a row to win 8-5.
Istvan Bolgar and
Peter Francis led from the beginning at No. 3 doubles and held off Berry's Marcelo Peterlini and Chris Clark 8-5 to put the Eagles up 2-0.
The match at No. 2 doubles was a tight contest that required a tie-breaker to decide the outcome. In the end it was the Eagles'
Adrian Bayh and
Charlie Rice who held of Marcelo Lebrao and Adam Clifton 9-8 (7-3) to give ERAU a 3-0 advantage heading into singles play.
Zander Woodford-Smith had little trouble getting by Clark, winning 6-1, 6-0 at the sixth position and Bes Comeras scored the clincher at the top spot, downing Aterna 6-1, 6-4.
The Eagles return to the courts at 9 a.m. (CST) on Thursday when they take on Savannah College of Art and Design in the quarterfinal.
