Late Penalty Kick Gives Rollins 1-0 Win Over Embry-Riddle

DAYTON BEACH, Fla. –  A penalty kick late in the second half was all the Rollins men's soccer team needed to come away from the Embry-Riddle Soccer Stadium with a win on Friday. The Tars moved to 1-0 overall with the win, while Embry-Riddle leveled its overall record at 1-1 on the year.

As is typical of Rollins/Embry-Riddle match-ups of the past, the game was a very physical contest from the first whistle as evidenced by the 31 fouls and five yellow cards accumulated by both teams.

The Tars had the better of the offense in the first half, outshooting the Eagles 7-1. Two of those chances were cleared off the line by Eagle defenders, while Viktor Begstrand's save in the 15th minute denied Dennis Chin's shot from point blank range.

As potent as the Tars' offense was, the defense was equally capable in the first frame. While the Eagles were able to possess the ball at times, they were unable to create meaningful opportunities to score as the Rollins defense was quick to close down any potential attack.

Although it appeared that Rollins had the better of the run of play in the first half, the Eagle defense was equal to the task, resulting in a scoreless tie at the halftime break

Much of the second half was played between the 18-yard boxes. Rollins continued to pressure the Eagles and held a 5-2 shot advantage, but the Eagles retained their composure, frustrating the Tars offense to keep the score tied a 0-0.

In the 72nd minute, Chin used his speed to get in behind the Eagle defense. Chin took the ball into the ERAU 18-yard box and after colliding with an Embry-Riddle defender, he was awarded a penalty kick. J.D. Gruenewald made good on his first attempt from the penalty spot this season to give the Tars the 1-0 win.

Bergstrand finished with two saves on the night, while his Rollins counterpart, Aaron Rokeach, had one save in the win.

The Eagles take their first road trip of the season on Tuesday when they travel to Opa Locka, Fla. to take on league newcomer Florida Memorial. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.
