Woods Leads Eagles Past Florida Memorial, 7-2

OPA LOCKA, Fla. – Ryan Woods totaled six points on two goals and two assists to lead the Embry-Riddle men's soccer team to a 7-2 win over The Sun Conference foe Florida Memorial, Tuesday at the Harry T. Moore Field. The Eagles are now 2-1 overall and 1-0 in conference play, while the Lions, whose men's soccer program is in its first season of competition falls to 2-2 and 0-1 in the league.

The Eagles opened the scoring early, with the first goal coming on a set piece in the sixth minute. After he was fouled in the middle of the pitch, Woods took the ensuing free kick and lifted the ball over the Lion defense to Alexis Pradie whose header beat FMU goalkeeper Rubiel Vazquez far post to put the Eagles up 1-0.

The Eagle lead was short lived as a defensive miscue led to an own goal that allowed the Lions to score the equalizer.

Following the Lion equalizer, the game settled into something of a back-and-forth affair until the 36th minute when Woods pulled the Eagles ahead with a solo strike from 30 yards out to make the score 2-1.

Less than a minute later, Woods was active again, this time assisting on Ryan Maloney's second goal of the season to give the Eagles a 3-1 advantage heading into the halftime break.

The second half belonged to the Eagles who controlled much of the play from the whistle. Their tenacity paid off in the 57th minute, when Marco Harleman, who entered the game as a substitute in the first half, recorded his second goal of the year. Robin Rosen received the about 40 yards away from the goal and, despite being pressured by three defenders, he managed to get a soft pass off to Harleman on the run. Harleman's first attempt went off the far post, but he was on hand to knock in the rebound to make the score 4-1.

The Eagles' fifth goal was also indicative of how hungry they were to score. Phil Middleton had two shots saved by Vazquez, but he was relentless in front of the goal, finally besting the FMU netminder for the Eagles' fifth goal of the match.

His first goal helped Middleton find his scoring rhythm. After the Eagles won a corner kick, Middleton collected the Lions' attempt at a clearance and buried his second goal of the match from just outside the 18-yard box.

Woods added the exclamation point in the 71st minute with another long range blast, but although the momentum swung heavily in the Eagles' favor, FMU managed to get on the scoreboard once again as Roberto Louhgry headed home the Lions' second goal in the 80th minute.
Vazquez and ERAU goalkeeper Viktor Bergstrand played only 85 minutes between the pipes as the game was called early due to lightning. Bergstrand, who was untested for much of the contest, had two saves on the day, while Vazquez had four saves in the FMU effort.

The Eagles return to the ERAU Soccer Stadium on Saturday when they host Shorter at 7 p.m.
