ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. - A penalty kick was the only difference on Wednesday night as Embry-Riddle fell to rival Flagler 2-1. The Eagles (1-3) were looking to increase their winning streak to two after their first win of the season on Saturday against Shorter.
Flagler got on the board early with a goal by forward Loren Cate after she received a pass from a Flagler midfielder and beat an Eagle defender to cross the ball in front of a diving Dina Roper in the fourth minute.
Neither team could put together a successful run until Eagle junior Elina Johansson, who was recently tabbed The Sun Conference Player of the Week, scored on a rip from 18 yards out after a cross from Krizzy Menez to knot the score at 1-1.
Right before the half a Flagler player dribbled into the penalty box and drew a foul. Flagler's Tiffany Urquhart managed to sneak the ball by Roper on the penalty kick to give the lead back to the Saints for good. All goals were scored in the first half as both teams battled to a scoreless second period.
Flagler outshot ERAU 24-10 on the game, while the Eagles managed one more corner kick 6-5. Roper made nine saves and played all 90 minutes.
The Blue and Gold return to the Embry-Riddle Soccer Complex on Sunday to host Eckerd College at 3 p.m.
