DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Freshman Hanna Lundqvist scored her second career hat trick on Sunday afternoon to lead the Embry-Riddle women's soccer team past the NCAA II Eckerd Tritons 4-0 at the Embry-Riddle Soccer Stadium. Lundqvist's hat trick helped improve the Eagles' record to 2-3, the Tritons fell to 0-3-1 with the loss.
Both teams seemed evenly matched at the beginning of the game as neither team could put the ball into the net. In the 27th minute the tides shifted firmly onto ERAU's side when sophomore Madeleine Edbom drove the ball to a streaking Lundqvist who beat her defender and shot it past Eckerd goalkeeper Kelly Zahorski for her fourth goal of the season. Eckerd and Embry-Riddle kept each other in check the rest of the half to enter the break with a 1-0 lead for the Eagles.
Fifteen minutes into the second half lightning was sighted and the game was delayed for 30 minutes before the two teams were allowed back onto the pitch to finish the game. The Blue and Gold took immediate advantage as Lundqvist received a pass from Elina Johansson and slid the ball past Zahorski for her second goal of the game.
Lundqvist returned the favor to Johansson by making a great pass to the junior in the 75th minute before Johansson ripped it into the back of the goal for her fifth score of the year.
Krizzy Menez assisted on Lundqvist's last goal in the 77th minute with a cross that Lundqvist flicked into the net to complete her hat trick and account for the final 4-0. Lundqvist leads all Eagle players with six goals on the season while Johansson trails closely behind with five.
The Eagles outplayed the Tritons all game as evidenced by the shot total (31-7 ERAU) and corner kick total (10-4 ERAU). Zahorski ended the game with 13 saves in the loss, while ERAU goalkeeper Dina Roper made two saves in the win.
The Blue and Gold will travel to North Carolina this weekend to take on NCAA II opponents Wingate and Catawba. The Wingate game is scheduled for Friday at 7 p.m., and the Catawba game will begin at 2 p.m. on Sunday.
