DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – After 90 minutes of regulation and two 10-minute overtime periods, neither the Embry-Riddle nor Warner men's soccer team was able to get on the scoreboard, resulting in a scoreless draw in Sun Conference action, Thursday at the Embry-Riddle Soccer Complex. The 13th-ranked Eagles are now 6-2-1 overall and 2-0-1 in league play, while the Royals move to 3-3-1 and 0-0-1 in the conference.
The physical nature of the game was evident in the 40 fouls that were called and the five yellow cards that were issued. The Eagles, who were missing a number of players due to injury, went toe-to-toe with a full-strength Royal team that used 11 substitutes to the Eagles' two. Warner held a slight 13-12 advantage in shots, while the Eagles were 8-7 in corner kicks.
One of the Eagles' best opportunities to get on the scoreboard came In the 78th minute when
Robin Rosen took the ball down the left side and got a cross off into the box.
Ryan Maloney, marked closely by a pair of Warner defenders, sprinted toward the near post. He got a boot on the ball as he slid in between the defenders, but the shot skipped just wide of the mark to keep the score level .
Warner earned a free kick in the 89th minute about 15 yards outside the box. Mauricio Castano took the free kick and blasted a shot on target, but ERAU goalkeeper
Viktor Bergstrand was up to the challenge, diving to his left to push the ball out of danger.
Neither team mounted much of an offense in the first overtime period, but the next 10 minutes of overtime saw the Eagles with a 3-1 advantage in shots. With just two minutes remaining the Eagles won a free kick at midfield, which was taken by
Ryan Woods. Woods lifted a ball over the Royal defense to Maloney, but Maloney's shot was stopped by Warner goalkeeper Jonathan Romero, resulting in the 0-0 tie.
Bergstrand and Romero finished with four saves apiece.
The Eagles return to action at 7 p.m, on Wednesday when they travel to St. Augustine to take on Flagler.
