Eagles Upset No. 20 SCAD

SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Embry-Riddle volleyball team upset No. 20 SCAD, 3-1, Friday night on the Bees' home court,  remaining undefeated in The Sun Conference with seven wins and no losses.

Set one was highlighted by the Bees' Olympia Haney, who tallied five kills on only eight attempts, leading her team to its only win of the match, 25-18.

The Eagles bounced back in set two as they jumped out to an 11-5 lead over the Bees, but SCAD tied it up at 21-21 late in the set, and took the lead after an Eagle attack error.  Abby Hall and Gloria Kemp blocked the Bees' Courtney Shelton to gain the momentum back for the Blue and Gold, allowing the Eagles to finish the set on top, 26-28.

The third set saw the Eagles down 6-1 and the No. 20 Bees poised to get revenge, but ERAU's Julia Frassetto served the Eagles back in the game, tying the score at 6-6. The Eagles jumped ahead at 8-7 and maintained the lead for the remainder of the set, pulling out the win 29-27.

The Bees opened the fourth set on top, with a 9-5 advantage over the Eagles, until Taylor Martin pounded a ball to the floor and initiated a four-point run, highlighted by two Alana Martinez kills, tying the score at 9-9. An attack error by the Bees allowed the Eagles to jump ahead 10-9, but SCAD's Courtney Shelton connected on a set from the Bees' setter, tying the score at 10's. The score was tied eight more times throughout the final set, but the Eagles capitalized on a 24-23 match point opportunity and closed out the contest in four sets, taking the final set 25-23. The Eagles' Jordan Holcomb tallied five of her 18 kills in the final set, guiding the Eagles to a victory over the No. 20 nationally ranked Bees.

Holcomb led all hitters with 18 kills, while also tallying 10 digs and two service aces. Hall added 12 kills, 12 digs, and four blocks. Martin contributed eight kills and six digs, while Gloria Kemp notched seven kills in the win. Martinez recorded six kills and led the defense at the net with five blocks. Frassetto picked up 19 digs in the four-set match and Adriana Vazquez racked up 48 assists for the Blue and Gold.

The Blue and Gold will suit up tomorrow afternoon at 12 p.m. as they take on the Tigers of Edward Waters in a conference match-up while looking to defend their unblemished conference record of 7-0. The Eagles are now 10-4 overall.
