Eagles Top Soldiers 90-44 to Take Gallaudet Tournament Title

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The fifth-ranked Embry-Riddle men's basketball team closed out its visit to the nation's capital with a 90-44 victory over Maryland Bible College in the championship game of the Gallaudet Tournament on Sunday. The Eagles wrapped up a five-game road swing with the win, improving to 7-1 on the year.

From the outset, the Eagles' defense proved to be too much for the Soldiers who, after scoring their first basket on a free throw at the 19:26 mark, managed only six points in the first 11 and a half minutes of play. ERAU bested Maryland Bible 16-7 on the defensive boards and seven of the Soldiers' drives to the basket were turned back by Eagle blocks, five of which came from David Butler.

On offense, ERAU was 9-of-13 from three-point land and 65.2 percent (15-of-23) from the field. The Eagles also did well passing the basketball, registering assists on 13 of their 15 made field goals. Ray Graham paced the Eagle offense in the first half with 11 points, while Blake Touchard was a perfect 4-for-4 from long range to finish with 12 first-half points in only 10 minutes of action. Nine of the 12 players who took the court for the Blue and Gold in the first half got on the scoreboard and contributed to the Eagles' 49-23 halftime advantage.

The second half featured more of the same as the Blue and Gold forced 12 Mayland Bible turnovers and held the Soldiers to just 24.2 percent shooting from the field. All 12 of the players that ERAU head coach Steve Ridder put on the floor, scored at least one point in the Eagles' 46-point victory.

Butler continued to solidify his standing as one of the best shot-blockers in program history as he bettered his previous single-game block record of nine, which he set last weekend against Life, with 10 in Sunday's game. He also grabbed the distinction of being the first player in ERAU history to record a triple-double tallying 13 points and 11 rebounds to go with his double-digit block total.

Touchard was tabbed as the tournament MVP after following up his 18-point performance on Saturday night with 16 points against Maryland Bible. Graham and Josh Seidel were each named to the all-tournament team after scoring 14 points and 11 points, respectively on Sunday.

The Eagles will be back at the ICI Center at 7 p.m. on Wednesday when they host former Sun Conference foe Edward Waters.
