MIAMI, Fla. - The Embry-Riddle men's tennis team suffered its
first loss of 2010, falling 7-2 to Barry on Saturday. Barry, ranked No. 2 in the
ITA/NCAA II national poll is 1-0 on the year, while the Eagles, ranked fourth in the NAIA preseason poll, drop to 3-1
overall.
The Buccaneers took a 2-1 lead after winning two out of
three doubles contests. The ERAU team of Jan Hoekzema and Alexis Huegas took an
early lead at No. 1 doubles, but Barry's Mokrzycki and Max Wimmer battled back
to take the match 8-4. Emmanuel Fraitzl and Sergio Velez topped ERAU's Charlie Rice and Luke Maricic at the third doubles spot, but the Eagles avoided the
doubles sweep when Istvan Bolgar and Peter Francis held off Ales Svigelj and
Andrew Sharnov 9-7 at No. 2.
Barry extended its lead to 4-1 after Sharnov defeated Bolgar
6-2, 6-3 at No. 5 singles and Fraitzl topped Rice 6-4, 6-4 at No. 4.
The Eagles put forward a gallant effort in the remaining
four singles matches as all four contests went to three sets. Francis recovered
from a 6-1 first set loss to Wimmer at No. 4, but rallied to take the next set
7-5. The sophomore was not able to hold off Wimmer in the third set, however,
falling 6-3 as Wimmer clinched the match for the Buccaneers.
At No. 1 singles, Woodford-Smith also rebounded from a 6-4
loss in the first set to win the second by the same margin, but in the end it
was Velez who took the match with a 6-3 win in the third. After dropping the
first set 6-3, Hoekzema pulled out a 7-6 (4) victory in the second, but he too
was unable to close out the match with a win, falling to Mokrzycki 6-4 in the
final set.
The Eagles' lone singles win came at the No.2 spot. Huegas
took a one-set lead with a 6-4 decision in the first, but Svigelj came away
with a 7-6 (5) win in the second to set up the decisive third frame. Both
players battled hard and in the end it was Huegas who got the better of
Sviegelj winning 6-4 in the third.
The Eagles return to the Crotty Tennis Complex at 3:30 p.m.
on Wednesday when they host NCAA I Jacksonville.
