MIAMI, Fla. - The fourth-ranked Embry-Riddle women's tennis team earned
its second conference win of the season with a 9-0 defeat of St. Thomas on
Friday. The Eagles are now 4-0 on the year, while the Bobcats drop to 1-4
overall and 1-2 in league play.
The Eagles easily swept through doubles dropping just five
games in three combined doubles contests. Natasa Zoricic and Yi Ching Chen were
the first off the court at the top spot after defeating Manuela Gil and Ydsia
Quintero 8-1. Julija Sotjkovska and Josefine Strom followed with an 8-2 victory
over Stephanie Pfeffer and Bridget Castillo, and Sara Abraúl and Caroline Nilsson completed the sweep by topping Camille Allen and Alina Ramirez 8-2.
Zoricic was the first to finish her singles match at the No.
1 position, easily dispatching Gil 6-1, 6-1. Chen also picked up a straight set
win (6-2, 6-0) over Castillo to score the clincher. Strom downed Allen 6-1, 6-0
at No. 5 and Stojkovska followed with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Pfeffer at the fourth
spot.
Abraúl and Nilsson each had long two-set battles, but they
both emerged victorious as Abraúl defeated Beatrice Giovanardi 6-1, 6-4 and
Nilsson bested Quintero 6-2, 6-3 to seal the win.
The Eagles return to action a 1 p.m. on Saturday when they
face NCAA II ninth-ranked Barry in Miami.
