DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle men's tennis team rebounded from a tough loss to Barry to notch a decisive 8-1 win over NCAA I Jacksonville on Tuesday. The Eagles won two of three doubles matches and swept the Dolphins in singles to improve their record to 4-1 on the year.
Jan Hoekzema and
Alexis Huegas were the first to tally a point for the Eagles, as they topped Chema Fantova and Hector Garcia 8-4 at No. 1 doubles.
Istvan Bolgar and
Peter Francis followed with an 8-2 victory over Jimmy Esteban and Aroon Khatter, but the Dolphins got a point back when Victor Vaz and Pitt Von Oretzen held off
Charlie Rice and
Luke Maricic 8-6 to make the score 2-1 in favor of the Blue and Gold.
Hoekzema was the first to finish his singles match, topping Vaz 6-3, 6-2 at the top singles spot. After taking the first set 7-5, Rice went up 2-0 in the second and emerged with the win when Esteban was forced to retire due to injury.
The clincher for the Eagles came at the No. 2 position where Huegas downed Fantova 6-2, 6-3. Bolgar beat Von Oertzen 6-3, 6-4 at No. 5, followed by Francis who earned a straight set 6-4, 7-6 win over Garcia at No. 3.
Zander Woodford-Smith sealed the win with a 6-3, 6-3 decision against Shalmi at No. 6.
The Eagles have very little time to recover as they return to the court to take on NCAA II No. 10 Rollins at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday.
