DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Embry-Riddle women's tennis team
led 2-1 after doubles play, but it was not enough to get by NCAA I Jacksonville
as the Eagles fell to the Dolphins 5-4 on Tuesday. The Eagles are now 4-2 on
the year, while Jacksonville improved to 2-3 with the win.
Josefine Strom and Julija Stojkovska were the first to walk
off the court with a win for the Eagles as they downed the Jacksonville tandem
of Fer Carrero and Iva Jaresova 8-4 at No. 2 doubles. The Dolphins bounced back
to tie the match when Virginia Iwinski and Ronnie Spencer held off Sara Abraul
and Caroline Nilsson 8-6 at the No. 3
doubles spot.
At the top doubles spot, Natasa Zoricic and Yi Ching Chen
claimed a 6-4 advantage before breaking the Dolphin duo of Tati Soldatova and
Eva Castaing to increase the lead to 7-4. Zoricic held serve to claim the 8-4
win, giving the Eagles a 2-1 advantage heading into singles play.
The Dolphins quickly tied things up and took the lead when
Castaing downed Chen 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2 singles and Soldatova topped Zoricic
6-1, 6-3 at the top spot. Nilsson pulled the Eagles level with a 6-3, 6-2
defeat of Jaresova, but Iwinski bested Stojkovska in three sets (6-2, 2-6, 7-5)
and Londano clinched the Jacksonville win with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Abraul at
No. 6.
Strom joined Nilsson as the only other Eagle player with a
singles win as she got the better of Carrero in a three-set battle, 3-6, 6-2,
6-3.
The Eagles' next game
will be on the road on Saturday when they travel to DeLand to take on another
NCAA I foe, Stetson at 10 a.m.
