DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The fourth-ranked Embry-Riddle men's
tennis team extended its 2010 conference record to 2-0 with a 9-0 shutout of
No. 19 Savannah College of Art and Design on Sunday. The Eagles are 6-1
overall, while the Bees fall to 6-1 on the year and 5-1 in league play.
Luke Marcic and Charlie Rice were the first to finish their
doubles match after downing Yusuke Kusuda and Mihai Draganescu 8-1 at No. 3.
Jan Hoekzema and Alexis Huegas were the next of the court with an 8-4 victory
over Dean Loocke and Kaan Yaylali.
At No. 2 doubles, Istvan Bolgar and Peter Francis found
themselves down early to Romeo Juhasz and Noah Merkerken. The Embry-Riddle duo
rallied from a 6-3 deficit to take a 7-6 lead. After being broken in the next
game, Bolar and Maricic broke back and then held serve to win the match 9-7 and
give the Eagles a 3-0 advantage heading into singles.
Hoekzema made the team score 4-0 with his 6-2, 6-1 win over
Loock at No. 1 singles and Charlie Rice scored the clincher at No. 4 with a
6-2, 6-2 decision against Merkerken at No. 5.
The Eagles return to the courts at 3:30 p.m. on
Thursday when they host the Clippers of NCAA II No. 9 Concordia (N.Y.).
