DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The fourth-ranked Embry-Riddle men's tennis team ran its 2010 record to 9-3 with an 8-1 victory over No. 19 Oklahoma Baptist, Saturday at the Crotty Tennis Complex.
The Eagles easily won at the first and third doubles positions as
Jan Hoekzema and
Alexis Huegas topped 15th-ranked Bruno Scacalossi and Gustavo Schaefer 8-3, and
Charlie Rice and
Zander Woodford-Smith downed Michael Canavan and Scott Milner 8-1. Sergej Babic and Marko Stanic gave the Eagles'
Istvan Bolgar and
Peter Francis a tough battle at the second doubles spot, but the ERAU duo was able to pull out a 9-7 win to give the Blue and Gold a 3-0 advantage heading into singles.
Huegas was the first to finish his singles match at No. 1, blanking Babic 6-0 in the first set and going up 2-0 in the second before Babic retired due to injury. Francis followed with a 6-2, 6-3 defeat of Scacalossi at No. 2 singles to score the clincher for ERAU.
Woodford-Smith bested Schaefer 6-1, 6-2 at No. 5, followed by Bolgar's shutout of Milner at No. 4 and
David Spennare earned his second dual match win of the season with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Canavan at the sixth spot.
The Bison avoided the shutout as Stanic registered a three-set win (3-6, 7-5, 10-1) over Rice at No. 3.
The Eagles travel to Sanford, Fla. on Monday to take on South Carolina State in a neutral site match slated for 11:30 a.m.
