Eagles Quiet Storm, 7-2

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Embry-Riddle women's tennis won a battle between two ranked teams on Tuesday as the third-ranked Eagles downed the Crimson Storm of 12th-ranked Southern Nazarene at the Crotty Tennis Complex. The Eagles improved their 2010 season record to 10-6, while the Storm falls to 3-4 on the year.

Natasa Zoricic and Yi Ching Chen gave the Eagles an early edge, winning their match at No. 1 doubles 8-4 against Olga Kozhevinkova and Viktoriya Lukinova. Steffie Plaza and Deisi Bolivar pulled the Storm level with an 8-5 win over Josefine Strom and Julija Stojkovska at No. 2 and SNU pulled ahead 2-1 with Sara Byrne and Hilary Galbraith's 8-6 edge of Landyn Scudder and Caroline Nilsson at the third doubles spot.

The Eagles were undaunted by SNU's one-point edge and stormed back to take all six singles matches and capture their fourth win against NAIA competition this season. Strom was the first to complete her match on Court 5. Down a break (3-2) in the first set, Strom came back to win four games in a row and won her match against Lukinova 6-3, 6-1.

Stojkovska earned an easy 6-1, 6-2 win over Plaza at No. 3 singles and Sara Abraul, who also rallied from being down a break in the first set, followed with a 6-3, 6-2 decision against Galbraith at the sixth spot.

For the second match in a row, Chen scored the clincher playing at the No. 2 spot in the lineup. The sophomore took a quick 5-0 lead, but dropped two games before taking the first set 6-2. She overpowered Kozhevnikova 6-1 in the second to earn her 18th win of the year.

It took three sets to decide the outcome of the matches at No. 1 and No. 3 singles. At the third spot, Nilsson fell behind Bolivar 6-4 in the first set but rallied to take the second 6-2. The third set needed a tiebreaker to determine the outcome and in the end it was Nilsson who took the set 7-6 with a 7-2 victory in the tiebreaker.

Zoricic battled back from a 6-3 loss in the first to win the second set 6-4. Byrne took a commanding 4-1 lead in the third set, but Zoricic regained her composure and rattled off four games in a row to take a 5-4 advantage. Byrne managed to tie the score at 5-5, but Zoricic held served and then broke the Storm's No. 1 player to come away with a 7-5 win.

The Eagles will take one-week break from action before returning to the courts for a pair of conference matches on Mar. 24. The Blue and Gold will take on Webber International at noon and will then travel down the road to Warner for a 4 p.m. match.
