DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The fourth-ranked Embry-Riddle men's tennis team earned its fourth straight win with a 6-1 decision against Cleveland State on Wednesday. Tuesday's match pitted teacher against student as ERAU head coach Dave Paschal coached against one of his former players, Brian Etzkin, who is now in his eighth season as the head coach of the Vikings' tennis program. The Eagles are now 11-3 on the year, while the Vikings, who broke into the NCAA Division I Top 75 on Tuesday, move to 9-5.
Charlie Rice and
Zander Woodford-Smith was the first ERAU tandem to register a point for the Blue and Gold and they downed Yannick Goosens and Chris Klepatz at the No. 3 doubles spot. At No. 2 doubles,
Istvan Bolgar and
Peter Francis took an 7-4 lead over Robert Fox and John Haley, but the CSU duo battled back to win the next four games and take an 8-7 advantage. Bolgar held serve for the Eagles to force a tiebreaker, which the Eagles won 7-4 to clinch the doubles point for ERAU.
Jan Hoekzema and
Alexis Huegas also went to a tiebreaker in their match against Phil Orno and Ryan Hamming at the top spot and in the end it was the ERAU duo that came away with a 9-7 win (7-5 in the tiebreaker) to complete the doubles sweep.
The first singles match off the court was at the No. 3 spot where Francis downed Hamming 6-2, 7-5. Bolgar followed with a 6-1, 6-3 defeat of Klepatz at No. 5 and Woodford-Smith scored the clincher after topping Haley 6-3, 6-2 at the sixth lineup position.
The Vikings got a point back at No. 1 singles, where Orno got the better of Hoekzema, 6-3, 7-5. Huegas answered for the Eagles with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Goossens at No. 2 and Rice closed out the scoring with a three-set win (6-3, 2-6, 7-5) over Fox at the fourth spot.
The Eagles have a one-week break until their next set of matches, starting with a conference doubleheader on Mar. 24. The Blue and Gold will take on Webber International in Babson Park at noon and will then travel down the road to Warner for a 4 p.m. match.
